Hypnosis for Stop Smoking

Most people make their first attempts at giving up smoking with the use of nicotine gum or the patches. Then there are those who try to “go it alone” with no crutches or support. Most of these people don’t succeed or it may take several rounds of stopping, starting again, and then stopping again before they have kicked the habit for good. Smoking hypnosis is not a commonly used treatment, but it is an effective one. About twice as many people who use hypnosis actually succeed as compared to those who rely on patches and gums. But combining smoking hypnosis with these other aids provides even better odds of quitting.

Hypnosis used for any purpose lets a patient relax but still be able to concentrate on their particular issue. While they are in this state of “concentrated relaxation”, their mind becomes open to the suggestions of the hypnotherapist. While the patient is “under”, the therapist may talk about all the negative aspects of smoking and suggest a number of different ways that he or she could break the smoking habit. When a session like this is over, ideally the smoker is convinced that smoking is wrong and most of their resistance has disappeared.

If smoking hypnosis does anything, it can at least lessen the patient’s stress. This is important since stress is often what triggers someone to light up a cigarette. If the hypnosis is successful in changing the smoker’s attitude about smoking, it should be much easier to quit.
